This. This is what I am aiming for with my white line in the River Washburn.
This piece by Jan Dibbets was made on the Amalfi coast in 1968 when a group of artists, including Richard Long, got together over a long weekend and made art. What was significant, was their use of materials, either found or low cost and that they ‘broke free’ of the gallery by making work in a wide range of spaces from the hillside to the sea and in the courtyard of the old arsenal.
Many of the works were also ephemeral, fleeting, with only photographs or the memories of those present, retaining any record of their existence and their making.
I don’t know what material Dibbets used for the white line in the sea but I do know that my vinyl line floats so I’ll just have to see what happens when I place it in the river when the water is higher and running faster.
