Not another performance piece smashing decorative ceramic plates, but an actual ‘Throwing Taster Class’ at the newly opened North Pottery in Otley. In fact, ther workshop on Monday was their very first one. Its a great set up. Just four wheels in the studio, so you gets lots of attention from the tutor, John and, once he’d demonstrated how to throw a small, straight sided pot, we were off. I think I made eight pots in the two hour session. One got binned as the base was too thin and got sliced off removing the pot form the wheel! It was very therapeutic and very absorbing. Hopefully I can get a space on their next 6 week course. The pot with the label is gong to get fired and glazed, so looking forward to seeing that once its ready.
Not sure where this will fit into my practice or my PhD, but there is a seam of boulder clay and coal peeking out of the rocks on the Chevin, the very northern point of the South Yorkshire Coalfields. Could be interesting to make something with that, material taken directly from the landscape.
