Farnley From Above Otley

One of the watercolour paintings by J. M. W. Turner that I am researching as part of my PhD is called ‘Farnley Hall from above Otley‘. I recently did a walk retracing the journey that Turner may have made from the gates of Farnley Hall to the Great Dibb on Otley Chevin, which seems the most likely spot that he made his sketches. There are three key features in those sketches that lead us to Great Dibb, Otley’s medieval bridge, Farnley Hall itself, and, the rocky outcrop of Almscliffe Crag.

Part of my process is to not only retrace Turner’s sojourns, but to make art in response to them, and this concertina book is one of those works. Not only is it inspired by the walk, but also by the bookbinding workshop I did recently but also the opportunity to submit a ‘zine for inclusion in an exhibition at Aire Place Studios. Fingers crossed they like it, but regardless, I really enjoyed the process of making the bookwork.
