Chicken, Duck and Pork and Eggs

I think I forgot to write a Blog Post about this exhibition! This was the second exhibition curated by Louise Winter in her home/gallery ’13B’ in Slovenia. The theme was There’s no place like home and it ran from 12 September to 10 October 2025.

The work I submitted was a photograph of the work I installed in the Leeds School of Arts for my MA Degree Show in September 2023. This work, heavily autobiographical, was a six foot cube, enclosed on all sides, with just a few peep holes knocked through knots in the wood. The interior, that shown in the photograph, was a ‘recreation’ of my childhood home. Not an exact replica, but a room containing many elements of my childhood (some of them original items) as well as memories of my Dad who died in 2021. It was my Dad’s death that led to me taking up my Fine Art degree at Leeds Beckett.

The work is called ‘A Coventry Boy’, after a statue in Coventry that sits outside the Cathedral and celebrates the importance of education, helping to lift young people up out of poverty through apprenticeships. That was my Dad’s story, and I guess mine too, all three children were encouraged through school and supported in whatever chosen direction we wanted to go.

I love the picture taken at the exhibition and posted on Instagram with the caption: Chicken, Duck and Pork and Eggs. I wonder what the audience made of it?

So what does it mean? Well, my Dad had a habit of reading out signs at the side of the road on long car journeys I think this must have come from a sign at a farm gate, advertising wares for sale. Only, Dad would read these out in a sing song voice and repeat them over, and over again. So it stuck, almost a ‘song’ from my childhood.
