A key part of my practice is making work in the landscape. The first work I made was called ‘Drawing a line on Pelstone Crag’ which involved suspending a 14m long white vinyl line (made from an old projector screen) down the face of Pelstone Crag on Otley Chevin.
I subsequently used that same line to make a series of works at Dob Park Bridge and in the River Washburn, but I hadn’t taken my line out for a walk since November 2024.
So, on Tuesday 3 March I set out to Timble and took ‘The Line’ for a walk out to Timble Ings, into the forest and then out to Denton Moor and Lippersley Pike. I made work at four locations: in a field near Timble, in Timble Ings Woods, in the heather on Denton Moor and at the cairn on Lippersley Pike.
The works I made in the landscape I photographed using an old Lubitel camera, which malfunctioned, and a Panasonic Lumix TZ-45 digital camera, which I dropped and broke off the battery door. Such is the nature of fieldwork!
Still, overall I was very happy with the results and the process of making. I was out on the more playing, making art, in splendid isolation. Drawing a line, making a mark, but leaving no trace.
